The growth in popularity of premium economy cabins amongst airlines has been made all the more relevant with the impact of COVID-19. This concept project studied seat architecture types to deliver design customisation solutions for airlines.
Three different seat architectures were analysed: Traditional recline, staggered layout and fixed back shell. A shift in the market and traveller expectations towards fixed back shell designs that allow customers to recline without impacting the living space of other seats made this the preferred architecture.
Modular features such as lowering armrests to create a shared companion space, individual divider screens to increase privacy for solo travellers and Zero-G comfort recline options can be selected by airlines based on their individual brand and market needs.
Incorporating JPA Design’s patented monocoque technology into the concept allows the shell to carry seat loads meaning under seat support structure can be removed. This frees up considerable space for customers providing both increased legroom and luggage storage capacity.
