The centre in Canary Wharf caters mainly to executives and staff from the surrounding office and commercial complexes.
The result is a smart, high-end, contemporary interior which is warm, welcoming and elegant to ensure that the visitor enjoys as relaxed and stress-free an experience as possible while the highly skilled medical specialists who work there have pride and relish working in the environment.
A wide sweeping concourse emanating from a relatively restricted entrance acts as constant reassuring focal point that contains the main waiting areas and circulation route through the facility.
At a practical level, the nature of the site within a mixed-use evelopment that remained in operation throughout the contract meant that a raft of
complex noiseand fire suppression, structural and power supply issues had to be integrated seamlessly into the design.
At the same time we were asked to develop designs for a second site at Orpington in outer south east London. This facility is aimed at a slightly different audience from the other centre.
It is accommodated in a 1,500 m² ground floor premises of a business park unit which has also been converted to create a diagnostic medical imaging centre containing the very latest specification medical diagnostic equipment as well as treatment rooms, consulting rooms and physio rehab rooms with an adjoining gym / fitness studio.
The interiors have a softer, more relaxed ambience which is finished in restful colours with furniture which is stylish and modern but which is ergonomically tailored to ensure that it is both comfortable and easy for visitors with mobility issues to use.
Otherwise the design process had to seamlessly integrate many of the same technical challenges which arose at Canary Wharf.
The consulting and treatment rooms have cleverly detailed, built-in joinery units and are arranged around a landscaped courtyard which enhances the feeling of well being and calmness while acting as a reference point for the main circulation routes through the building.
The central corridor enjoys indirect daylight from the opaque glazed inner walls of the main rooms.
The gym / fitness studio benefits from daylight to two sides and is contained within an airy, high-ceilinged space clad in a warm coloured, acoustic, timber cladding system.
